We would like to express a special thank you to Fergusons removals in Cramlington, for their continued support and assistance transporting educational equipment to Sri Lanka.

The Purpose of this project is for Astley Community High School to have a long-term commitment to aid the progressive development of Sri Lankan schools which have suffered directly or indirectly as a result of the Dec 2004 tsunami.

Through the support given by this project, the hope is to improve considerably the life chances of the schools' pupils, and to give Astley pupils a practical insight into a developing country and a first hand opportunity to really make a difference.

The consequences of the earthquake and resulting tsunami waves will never fully be calculated. The known death toll is over 300,000, but it could be far higher, no one will ever know. Devastation to property and livelihoods on a colossal scale; countless lives altered forever.

When we returned as a school in January 2005, everyone was stunned and in some way touched by the tragedy. A number of staff and pupils had previously visited the affected areas; some knew of the people lost in the tragedy. We all wanted to do something.
